Internship Awareness

Throughout internship awareness week, you can get information about internships over the lunch hour outside the Dining Hall.

Can’t visit over lunch? Contact Erica Woods-Schmitz, internship coordinator, at ewoods@mlc.edu or Connie Bottger, Career Development Director at bottger@mlc.edu. Or you are always welcome to visit Career Development on the 2nd Floor of the Olson Student Center for information.

Meanwhile, see what some MLC students have to say about their internships:

My professional growth was tremendous because of the experience as a whole Cargill provided for me. Now, as my internship has been completed, I feel that I have accomplished all my goals. I networked and tried to learn as much as possible in the weeks I had. I learned that although I have learned much in school, I have so much more to learn in the jobs I hope to perform some day. I think the well rounded experiences will put me in a great position to really jump start my career and accomplish many goals set forth for myself in the future.

I did my internship at UNMC in the Genetics, Cell Biology & Anatomy lab. The project involved studying colon cancer in mice. What I did was to help genotype a segment of mice DNA about 5 million base-pairs long. The reasoning behind this was to see where the genotype crossed-over from a strain called B6 (which increases the number of tumors) to 129P (which decreases the number of tumors).

This internship was a very good experience because I plan on furthering my education once I graduate from Midland and go into a research field. So getting to see how a research lab works and the different equipment they use was great. It was also great to kind of get my foot in the door and make some connections at UNMC since I am applying to graduate school there. And I know that another graduate program I am applying to was also really interested in what I was working on at UNMC. Plus it was nice to get out of the classroom and have a more hands-on experience for a few weeks.

I have done two internships in which I gained experience that has helped me further my career goals. In one, I went to a veterinary clinic and followed all of the practicing vets during their rounds, as well as doing any jobs that they thought I was fit to do or were allowed to do. My second internship was for credit and took place during the last semester. This internship was with a professor in the Biology department, and my duties were to help with planning, setting up, and administering the laboratory sessions for one of his courses. Both experiences have helped me gain not only the knowledge of what it is really like to be a professional in those fields but also has strengthened my interests.

The past semester I completed an internship with First State Bank and Trust. This was an unforgettable experience because I learned so many new things about the loan department and about working in general. Being my first internship it had both negative and positive things for me. The negatives came in because my internship sometimes went out of track and I was afraid to say something about it. The positives came in because I learned something different every day and banking is in the field of my major (Business). An internship benefits everyone because it is a good working experience and opportunity to expand your knowledge. I recommend for everyone to take advantage of the opportunity that Midland Lutheran College offers you with internships because it will help you put in practice your skills.

The Internship Program at Midland Lutheran College through the Business Department was very beneficial for me. I got the opportunity to experience first-hand the field of work that I was interested in making a career out of. I learned the procedures and the production of the business that I got to intern with and got to have a real life experience of what the business world is like today. Not only did I get to experience it, but for our monthly meetings, I got the opportunity to hear other interns’ stories of their internships and what they are learning and experiencing. Overall the internship experience through the Business Department really helped me get a head start on my career and what it’s going to take to make it in the business world today.
