Prof. Shell showing art at Bellevue

If you find yourself down Bellevue way in the next two months, make plans to stop in at Bellevue U. and see Midland art professor Tracy Shell’s exhibit.

Along with artist bev Valentine, Prof. Shell’s ceramics will be on display from now until January 23 at the university, located at 1000 Galvin Rd. South in Bellevue.

As always, Prof Shell’s work is distinctive and beautiful. If you’re in the neighborhood, check it out.

Oh, the drama (or the comedy)

Scapino! begins its run tonight in the Kimmel Theatre.

The play, as described to me is:

A pinch of Moliere
A dash of the Marx Brothers
A twist of Austin Powers
A whole heap of Fun!

Sounds like a good time to me.

The show times are

NOV. 6, 7, 8 – 7:30PM
NOV. 9 – 2:00PM

(FREE TO MLC STUDENTS, FACULTY AND STAFF)

Election Eve

Just a friendly reminder, Warrior Nation, that tomorrow is Election Day. I know in the maelstrom of political ads and aerial mud assaults, it might be easy to overlook or ignore tomorrow’s vote.

Please don’t.

I will not tell you for whom to vote. Not my place.

I will, however, heavily encourage (read: beg) you to vote.

Voting is, without much argument, one of the most important things you can do as a citizen. The effort, sacrifice, and battles that have been fought to make sure we are free to cast our vote make voting our absolute duty.

Do your part. Do your research. Cast your vote.

In honor of the events that will transpire tomorrow, I turn to the words of a man who fully understood the value of an individual’s vote.

Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs even though checkered by failure, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat. -Theodore Roosevelt

Do your duty, vote tomorrow.

Seminar aims to help manage your finances

Once again, the fine folks over in Student Development have a great program on tap.

As the economy continues to be stressed (and as broke college students) its important to learn to manage funds. Trust me, I have a degree in journalism…. I can barely balance my checkbook.

Here’s the details from Jamie:

Hello Everyone!

I wanted to inform you of a great opportunity our students (and you!) have to participate in an excellent educational program this coming Wednesday, September 24th. The Office for Student Involvement is hosting a Financial Fair in the Dining Hall. We will be having two Financial Consultants speaking on “How to Build and Maintain Your Credit” and “Smart Investment Choices”. If anyone is interested in hearing both speakers, it is possible, as sessions will run for both topics from 11:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m. and 12:30 p.m.-1:00 p.m. in separate PDRs. If any Faculty is interested in offering extra credit opportunities, there will be a sign-in sheet at the door. We appreciate your support and look forward to seeing you there!!!

Thank you,
Jamie Meints

Mark those calendars. I wish I had been to something like this when I was an undergraduate. I’m pretty sure I’m still paying off a pizza or two paid for with a credit card.

Talk Like a Pirate Day returns

From the Lincoln Journal Star:

Avast, me hearties!

Friday is International Talk Like a Pirate Day, a holiday in which common folk pillage the scallywag vernacular for “Ahoys!” and “Aaaarrrrgggghhhhs!”

According to the holiday’s creators, it’s “the only day of the year when you can talk like a pirate and not be entirely insane.” (Or like James Hetfield, lead singer of Metallica.)

Origin

Talk Like a Pirate Day, like most silly holidays, started on a whim and with the aid of Dave Barry.

In the summer of 1995, a few buddies in Oregon were playing a heated racquetball game when, for no apparent reason, they started talking like pirates, shouting cheers and jeers to one another such as, “Now watch as I fire a broadside straight into your yardarm!”

After the game, the guys agreed that life is indeed better when you talk like a pirate. So they created an official holiday when people could freely do so. They chose Sept. 19, the birthday of one of the creators’ ex-wives.

Seemingly destined to be just one of those holidays celebrated by a few friends, Talk Like a Pirate Day went big-time when the guys asked columnist Dave Barry to give their invention some publicity.

Barry loved it. And obliged. And the rest is history.

Check out the link, it includes a primer on how to talk like a pirate:

Preface every sentence with an overly dramatic exclamation, like “Aaarrrrgghh!” (denotes anger), “Ahoy!” (hello) or “Avast!” (listen up).

Eyepatches, as always, are entirely up to your fashion sense.

Slam poetry battles begin Friday

Be sure to head over to Kimmel Theatre Friday night at 7 p.m. for the first round of the Great Plains Poetry Pile-Up II.

Second round, semi-finals, and the championship match start at 2 p.m. Saturday.

For those unfamiliar with slam poetry, this is not “Roses are red” kind of material.

Part rap battle, part debate, part verbal joust, part “yo momma,” the topics will be somewhat adult in nature (i.e. gender, sexual politics, race issues, etc.). I guess the best advice is to leave the little ones at home.

Right now, Dr. Henry Krusiewicz has about 30 slam poets on tap (and some on a wait list). These are some of the best slam poets in the region, so competition should be pretty fierce.

Make plans to pop over and watch the verbal fireworks. Any questions, please contact Dr. Krusiewicz at 402-941-6340 or at krusiewicz@mlc.edu
