PBL-SIFE helps others dress for success

Sports marketing intern to the stars Nick passed along this information from PBL-SIFE.

The Midland Lutheran College Phi Beta Lambda-Students in Free Enterprise (PBL-SIFE) team will conduct a professional clothing drive throughout the month of October at various locations across Fremont.

The clothing drive will provide professional clothing for individuals preparing for job interviews who cannot afford to purchase new clothes. The Dodge County Low Income Ministry will distribute the clothing collected for Care Corps residents.

Items such as suits, sport coats, ties, collared-dress shirts, business-appropriate skirts, dress slacks, blouses and dress shoes will be accepted. Drop-off boxes can be found at the following locations: Maurices, JCPenney, Sunkist Dry Cleaners, Bank of the West, First State Bank (23rd Street location) and American National Bank (Sixth and Broad streets location).

Maurices will give a 20 percent off coupon for any single item for each piece of clothing brought in.

The clothing drive will conclude Oct. 31. For more information, contact Rita Bristol at bristol@mlc.edu or (402) 941-6501.

Now, you don’t have to give the shirt off of your backs, but maybe a few dress shirts, skirts, and ties would be nice.

Academic Encounter Day

Today campus will be abuzz with folks here for the Academic Encounter Day program For thos eunfamiliar, this is a day when the entire campus comes together to discuss and debate an important topic of the day.

This time around, Health and Wellness will be the topic and Dr. Allyson Backstrom has lined up quite a list of heavy hitters in that area. Check out the agenda at this link.

In addition to the who and where part of the day, Dr. Backstrom has included links to some pertinent and pretty interesting articles on health and wellness.

This is my wife’s area of academic and professional specialty, so you just have to trust me when I tell you that health and wellness are two areas that we take for granted, yet are some of the most important areas of our lives.

See you there!

Good day yesterday

Yesterday about 75 high school journalists were on campus for J-Day.

As a decade-long veteran of daily news, I was asked to hold a couple of sessions on media relations, which I love to do.

It was great working with the student journalists, and I was particularly glad to hear that newsrooms, no matter high school, college, or professional, all share the same problems and pleasures. See, it’s a little-known fact that journalism is one of the most fun careers you can have. The one caveat, you must refuse to grow up. There is no place in journalism for people who can’t have fun!

Thanks to Prof. Jon Ash and all his journalism students for making yesterday so much fun. I’m very much looking forward to next years event!

Warrior Wieners!

Again, from Jill Hoops:

Warrior Wiener Wednesday – Hot dogs will be sold from 1:00 – 4:00 on the campus green for $1.00.  When purchasing a hot dog, you will be entered into the general raffle which has wonderful prizes.  So, be looking for us out on the campus green tomorrow afternoon.

Administrators sacrifice neckwear for United Way

Bring some dollars tomorrow and certain administrators will provide the scissors.

As part of the week’s United Way festivities (some may say shenanigans) some of the school’s top dogs will be letting you lop off some of their neckties for a $1 donation.

There’s also a coloring contest for those who never outgrew their Crayolas (kids can play, too).

I’ll let Jill Hoops tell you the details.

For only $1.00, you have the opportunity Tuesday to cut an inch from Dr. Fritz, Dr. Valerio, Dr. Smorynski or Jodi Benjamin’s ties. All day they will be ready for you to come and cut off their tie.

Coloring Contest – A coloring contest is being held for all age categories with prizes for the best colored. If interested please come to the Institutional Advancement Office to donate $5.00 which will get you or whoever you wish, entered into our coloring contest and we will provide you the picture to color. These pictures will need to be returned by noon on Friday and will be posted on the 1st floor of the Anderson building. The age categories are as follows:

0-2
3-5
6-8
9-12
13-16
17 and OLDER

Also, please remember Split-The-Pot tickets are still on sale all week and can be purchased in the Institutional Advancement Office as well. The winner will be announced at half-time of the football game on Saturday.

Don’t forget your pledge cards need to be returned by Friday and remember all the proceeds go to benefit the United Way.

My only advice is to make sure they’re aware you’re about to cut some tie off… Approaching someone’s neck with scissors unannounced could lead to some embarrassing moments (as well as prove which of the above people know ju-jitsu).

Time to pick up, company is coming

Eileen Thornburg reminds us that homecoming is quickly approaching, which means a lot of visitors to campus.

Better pick up a bit, she says.

Company will be coming for Homecoming in October!
Have you been a volunteer recently? If not, how about donating at least one hour to beautify the campus!

First Friday

And so ends the first (albeit abbreviated) week of classes for the 2008-09 school year.

What have we learned?

Well, for starters there’s a heck of a lot of new faces on campus.

New first-year students.

New transfer students.

Two(!) new deans.

Two new curriculum paths (Journalism and Human Performance)

A news Master’s program.

A new blog (thank you, thank you very much)

So, as we continue to mark the College’s 125th year, there’s a heck of a lot of new things to celebrate, too.

See you at the Convocation this morning.

Opening Convocation This Friday

Mark your planners (and what cool planners they are) for Friday at 11 a.m.

The Opening Convocation will be held in the Event Center and there’s always some good information to be gleaned from this gathering.

– Student Senate will share what it has to offer students

– First-year students will get some advice from someone who has been there, done that

– Professor Pat Trautimas will have some words from the faulty

– Find out how valuable a Midland education is from a distinguished alumnus

– Be introduced to the new Dean of Students and Dean of the College

– Recognize outstanding student-athletes
