What grades really mean – and what parents can do to help boost them – has been a mystery to many for years.
In the fall, parents of elementary students in the Omaha Public Schools won’t just see a grade. They’ll get information about their children’s progress that should help them get involved.
“Each student will be graded according to how they’re doing with (state and local) standards. They won’t be graded to everyone else in the classroom,” Sally Hansen, of the OPS department of Curriculum and Learning, explained to parents at Spring Lake Magnet Elementary. Standards are what a child should know and be able to do at a certain grade level.
Students in pre-kindergarten through fourth grade will be judged as either Beginning, Progressing, Proficient or Advanced, and their grades will be coded as B, PG, PF or Adv. Charts explaining what is required to reach each level will be included for reading, language arts/writing and math.
Students in grades five and six will begin receiving letter grades instead of number grades.
