Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year

On behalf of the Office of Communications, please have a very merry Christmas and best wishes for the new year.

To send you off on your travels home, be they near or far, we share with you words of President Calvin Coolidge:

“Christmas is not a time or a season but a state of mind. To cherish peace and good will, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas. If we think on these things, there will be born in us a Savior and over us will shine a star sending its gleam of hope to the world.”

Travel safe and we look back to seeing you next term.

Last night’s tree lighting, chorus sing-along, and Empty Bowls event was quite a beginning to the Midland Heralds Christmas festivities.

If you missed it, you missed a lot.

The Warrior Wildfire dance team was serving the hot chocolate. The Pathfinder chorus was leading the carols, Dr. Fritz was leading the countdown, and Prof. Shell was serving the soup.

Don’t forget this Saturday is the German Feast in the dining hall, the Lessons and Carols concert in Clemmons, and the Star of Bethlehem show in the Planetarium!

Thank you, veterans

Armistice Day. Veterans Day. The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

Many names, one purpose.

Please thank a veteran today for your ability to pursue your education and for your freedom.

God of the ages,
We thank You for all who have served in the armed forces of this country.
We thank You for the freedom their sacrifice has earned and guarded for us. Help us to prize this freedom and use it well.
We ask You to bless all living veterans in a special way today, as well as the families of all veterans.
Comfort those who grieve for those who gave the last full measure of devotion.
Strengthen those who bear physical, emotional, and spiritual wounds.
Stand with those who provide care to them.
Move us to reach out to sisters and brothers who are veterans, or relatives of veterans, or who currently serve in the military.
We pray for the day when no one needs to serve in the military. Help us to live now in anticipation of that day, as people who long for peace, who pray for peace, and who seek to be peacemakers in this world.

We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
